The 10 Most Common SEO Mistakes on Swiss SME Websites

We've now automatically checked hundreds of Swiss SME websites with Seoly. The same ten problems keep showing up, regardless of industry or company size.

1. No or a poor page title

The title tag is what Google shows as the blue link in search results. Without one, Google shows the domain name instead - which looks unprofessional and gets fewer clicks.

2. Missing meta description

Without a meta description, Google picks its own text snippet from the page - often an awkward one. A good description (120-160 characters) directly improves click-through rate.

3. No or multiple H1 headings

Every page needs exactly one H1 as its main heading. Multiple H1s confuse Google about what the page is actually about.

4. Missing analytics

Surprisingly common: companies simply don't know how many visitors their site gets or where they come from. Without these numbers, you can't measure marketing success.

5. Slow load time

Over two seconds of response time noticeably costs visitors and ranking. Usually caused by uncompressed images or missing caching rules.

6. Images without alt text

Alt text doesn't just help screen readers - it also helps Google Image Search, an often-overlooked extra traffic channel.

7. No canonical tag

Without a canonical link, Google can't decide which version of similar URLs (e.g. with/without www) is the "real" one - this dilutes ranking.

8. Missing or incomplete sitemap

9. No Open Graph tags for social media

If a link is shared without og:title, og:description and og:image, the preview on WhatsApp or LinkedIn looks broken or empty - costing trust and clicks.

10. Too little text content
