SEO for Shopify Stores: The Most Important Settings

· 6 min read

Shopify takes care of some SEO fundamentals automatically - like the sitemap. But other important settings need your attention, or you're leaving revenue on the table.

1. Title and meta description per product

In the Shopify admin, under "Edit website SEO" on each product, you can set a custom title and description - otherwise Shopify defaults to the product name, which is rarely optimal.

2. Clean up URL handles

By default, Shopify carries the product name straight into the URL. Short, clear handles without unnecessary filler words tend to perform better.

3. Alt text for product images

Especially for stores with many product images, this is an often-overlooked step - every image should get a short, descriptive alt text in the media library.

4. Avoid duplicate content across product variants

Color or size variants often create very similar pages. A correctly set canonical tag prevents these variants from competing against each other in ranking.

5. Content beyond the store itself

Pure product pages often don't have enough text to rank well for informational searches. A Shopify blog with buying guides and usage tips fills that gap.

6. Keep an eye on load time

Too many apps is the most common reason for slow Shopify stores - every app loads its own code. Regularly uninstall unused apps instead of just disabling them.

The Seoly check automatically detects when a page runs on Shopify and shows you exactly where in the Shopify admin to fix any issues found.
